Reading books

Children will have received their reading books and reading diaries on Friday. We are encouraging books to be read on a daily basis in Year 1 and will be changing books everyday if it is appropriate. We are aware that some children will take longer to finish their books. If this is the case, then please write the page number that the child has got to in their reading records.

As a part of uniform requirements, children in year 1 are expected to bring in a book bag every day. This is so the books the children bring home are safe and the letters they receive can be stored.

If you would like to volunteer as a parent reader in class, please speak to the office.

Spelling and maths home learning will be sent home weekly. Please make sure that your child writes in pencil and then returned to school by the following Wednesday. There will be a spelling test for children every Friday. New spellings will be given to the children on a Friday after the children have been tested. Topic home learning tasks will be set at the beginning of every term. Children can complete topic activities across the half term. Further information about this will be included in children’s homework books.

This half term our main topic is on ‘space’. We will be reading Jill Murphy’s Whatever Next about a bear who goes to space and learning lots of fun facts.  We would be grateful for donations such as cereal boxes, clean plastic bottles and general objects that could be used for junk modelling as we will be creating 3D rockets in class. This term, we will also be learning about Seasonal changes. Once a week children will have a Singing Assembly with the Music Specialist. They will learn lots of songs and use different instruments. Spanish lessons will take place next term.

Attendance and Punctuality

It is very important that the children attend school every day. Our school target is to have above 96% attendance across the school. Each week, the class that has the highest attendance will get a reward. In addition, please make sure you are punctual for drop off and home time.

Please make sure your children are wearing black school shoes. We have noticed that some children have been wearing trainers. This is not uniform and you will receive a letter home if they continue.

  • Class Trips – We will no longer be accepting cash or cheques for trips and payment will only be possible using our SIMS Agora online payment system. Your child has a unique payment number which you may have already used to set up online payments for school lunches and after school care. If you have not set up your account, please notify the school office and you will be provided with your child's unique number. If trips do not require payment, you will still need to go online to give permission for your child to attend.

  • Uniform – Please adhere to the High View Uniform code. Monogramed items (jumpers, cardigans and book bags) can be obtained online from or telephone 01923 255 525. Other standard uniform items can be sourced locally.

  • School dinners – If a child wishes to change from school dinners to packed lunch or vice versa, they may only do so at the beginning of each half term.  Payment should be made online using SIMS Agora. Details can be obtained from the school office.  If any child has been advised by their GP or Health Care Professional to either, follow a special diet; or to avoid certain foods, please contact Edwards and Ward Special Diet and Allergen help line on the details below:
